Lindsey Graham headed to Mar-a-Lago for GOP peace talks with Trump

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is heading to Mar-a-Lago as a peace emissary from the Republican Party to former president Donald Trump.

The South Carolina Republican will spend time on the golf course with the former GOP president, who remains angry that Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell didn’t intervene in the election process to keep him in the White House, in hopes of convincing Trump to halt his attacks on party leadership, a personal familiar with the plans told CNN.

“This person said Graham wants to be ‘constructive,’ urging Trump to use his influence for the party’s good,” the network reported.

McConnell vowed Wednesday that he would never visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago, but other GOP leaders — including House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House minority whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) — have traveled to the former president’s private club and residence.

Graham and other senior Republicans are concerned the feud between Trump and McConnell will hurt the party’s chances to regain majorities in the House and Senate.

“They’re now at each other’s throat,” Graham told Fox News earlier this week. “I’m more worried about 2022 than I’ve ever been. I don’t want to eat our own.”

Republicans are concerned that Trump’s influence over the party is keeping some strong candidates from running for office and encouraging less viable candidates — such as conspiracy-mongering Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who is panicking GOP leaders by considering a run for U.S. Senate — to jump into races they’re less likely to win.
