Republican governor brags South Dakota profited off of Trump 4th of July — but they actually lost money

Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) celebrated the profits she said that President Donald Trump’s July 4th Independence Day celebration made despite the pandemic.

According to KEVN News, Noem said, “visitors spent $2,000,000 during the 2020 Mount Rushmore Fireworks display. This resulted in $160,000 in tax revenue for state and local governments.”

She wrote a letter to the South Dakota congressional delegation saying that she wants another event at the national monument.

She and Michelle Thompson, president of the Black Hills & Badlands Tourism, celebrated the profit, saying that she thought 2021 would make even more money, despite not having Donald Trump as the draw.

“We think that this could be a much bigger year with the pandemic not as serious as it was last July,” Thompson said. “We can have bigger crowds. We’re really looking forward to drawing more people into the area.”

While fireworks anywhere are a great celebration of America’s birthday, South Dakota actually lost money on the event. If the profit was only $160,000 in tax dollars, that means the state still lost $440,000.

Ahead of the event last year, federal procurement documents showed that “an environmental consulting service called Ero Resources Corporation was paid $138,800 to work on the event,” TMZ said. “Another consulting company got over $30k for permit review and display inspection, while a protective services business landed nearly $33k to provide security and screening.”

That added to nearly $30,000 on National Fire Protection Association code consultation, and “about $3,500 on portable toilets.”

It’s unknown why the governor is asking the congressional delegation for support unless she wants the congressional delegation to get American taxpayers to fund the South Dakota fireworks.
