2 men charged with assaulting South Philly girl, robbing family

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Federal prosecutors have charged two men with assaulting a teenage girl in South Philadelphia and robbing the family of a million dollars.

Khaiyri Burgess and Shaquan Johnson are accused of pulling the 17-year-old girl from her bed, pistol-whipping her in the head several times, then holding her at gunpoint as they robbed the family of their life savings and jewelry.

The incident happened Aug. 8, 2018.

The girl’s parents own the Scoreboard Sports and Grill, a restaurant at Washington Avenue and 10th Street. Prosecutors say the two 20-year-old men threatened that if she didn’t lead them to the safe, they would kill her parents and kidnap her and dump her body.

The case was brought by a new federal initiative called “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a collaboration between federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Burgess and Johnson are charged with robbery and weapons offenses.

If convicted, the two men could face life in prison.
