3 dead in head-on crash on Ridge Pike in Montco

UPDATED: 11 a.m.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Police in Plymouth Township, Montgomery County are investigating a violent head-on crash that left three people dead. A busy stretch of Ridge Pike was closed for hours.

Early Friday morning, a five-points intersection at Chemical Road and Ridge Pike was still littered with pieces of a Honda Pilot and Dodge Caravan.

The front end of the Pilot was smashed, and the front passenger side door was missing. About 50 feet away was the minivan, the front half mangled. And there was what looked like blood on the airbags.

Just before midnight, police say, the SUV and van collided at Ridge Pike and Colwell Lane. Firefighters and cops got to the scene and shut down part of the road for about six hours. Blue Route ramps to Ridge were closed off.

After investigators combed through the scene and tow trucks hauled away the twisted steel, the intersection opened up around 6 a.m., in time for the morning rush.

Officials are trying to figure out what exactly happened, how fast these cars may have been going before the crash. It’s not yet clear how many people were involved in the crash, or what their current condition is.
