There’s also an Amazon grocery store planned for Northern Liberties.
North Broad Street’s newest grocery store is very close to launch. The Aldi next to the Divine Lorraine will open at some point in November, the discount supermarket chain confirmed to Billy Penn.
With an entrance on Ridge Avenue just before it hits Broad, the store is the first Philadelphia Aldi that’s part of a mixed-use development, taking up the ground floors of a 14-story tower. The building, which has 1300 Fairmount Ave. as its address, will also house 475 apartments and a preschool. There’s a parking garage built in.
The new Aldi will feature a “fresh foods” section that’s 40% larger than the brand’s older stores, Center Valley Division Vice President Bob Grammer said in an email.
It’ll have six aisles and feature open ceilings, covering about 25,000 square feet. That makes it about twice the size of the South Street Whole Foods, or one and a half times as big as the Trader Joe’s at Broad and Arch.
Slowed somewhat by the pandemic, the city’s supermarket boom is slowly continuing to roll out.
In January, the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections said it had issued 255 permits for retail food sales over the past two years. Many of the previously announced grocery stores are still in the works.
Opening date for the Lidl at 9751 Roosevelt Blvd. is now set for some time in 2021. Giant’s two-story flagship in Center City was scheduled to open this fall; the company has not commented on its current status, nor that of the brand’s planned fourth Philadelphia Heirloom Market, going into the long-vacant space at 201 South St.
New to the list is Amazon, which the Philadelphia Business Journal reported plans to open a new grocery store at 501 Spring Garden St..
An Amazon spokesperson wouldn’t comment on the project, but the Business Journal reports the company has leased 40k of a 60k mixed-use development project slated for the corner of Fifth and Spring Garden.
