PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — At least six Philadelphia police officers have been shot in an active situation near Broad and Erie streets.

Sources say the six cops were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. One was shot in the hand, another in the leg. Another was shot in the head but is expected to be OK.

The incident began around 4:30 p.m. and is ongoing.

Police say the initial incident was to serve a warrant at that house.

Dozens of cops are on the scene, ducking behind cars for cover. One officer was seen limping and rushed to a car by fellow officers.

Police are surrounding a house on the block. Some officers may be inside with the shooter. Police appear to have at least two people in custody.

They are urging the public to stay away from the area.

The mayor, district attorney, and police union president have all made their way to Temple University Hospital. Two officers were taken to Einstein Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The FBI has offered assistance to the police department.

Gunshots are still be heard as of 5:30 p.m., according to neighbors. One man told KYW Newsradio he heard gunshots.

“They made everybody come back, run back. … When I got here, I see all the cops, I see a lot of cop cars coming down, and they said like three cops got hit, you know what I mean. So, so now the guy still over there, and now they trying to negotiate with the guy.”

The rest of the day was otherwise quiet in Nicetown.

Broad Street Line trains are bypassing the Erie, Allegheny, and Hunting Park stations until further notice due to police activity. SEPTA bus routes 23, 53, 56, H and XH are currently on detour.
