PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We know that going back to school is stressful for parents and children, but for some kids, it can be too much to handle.
New year, new school, new friends can all make kids anxious for a few days, but if it last for weeks, you may have a problem.
Dr. Kelly Moore, a psychologist at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, says if your child is having prolonged sleeping problems, doesn’t want to go to school, is having trouble making new friends or reconnecting with old ones, sit them down and start talking.
“‘I’ve noticed that you haven’t been like yourself, can you tell me what’s going on.’ That maybe they’ll share with you on their own about things that might be happening at the school, after that point if you still feel you need to get more information, then the next step may be ask their teacher or a coach or someone who may have regular contact with them,” Moore said.
She says if talking doesn’t help, contact a professional. The worst thing you can do is nothing.
