PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — City officials are opening up the Holiday Inn Express in Center City as a quarantine site in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Police have Walnut Street blocked off between 13th and Juniper streets, which is the block where the hotel is located.
“We do intend to use this for quarantine space and provide wraparound services for folks who couldn’t quarantine at home,” said city Managing Director Brian Abernathy at a briefing on March 24.
City officials emphasize the hotel is not just being used for people who are homeless but also, potentially, for first responders and healthcare workers.
The city has also been looking at other sites for the same function.
As with so many aspects of the coronavirus response, there’s no timeline for returning the hotel to normal. It will be used by the city for as long as necessary.
