Rare Disease Day: Local 5-Year-Old Girl Is Only One In The World With This Specific Kind Of Epilepsy

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

BLUE BELL, Pa. (CBS) — The last day of February marks Rare Disease Day. It’s estimated that 30 million people have a rare disease, so scientists and families are trying to raise awareness.

Many rare diseases go undiagnosed, and there is no cure for most.

Having a rare disease is hard enough, but imagine if you find out your child is the only one in the world with a unique genetic mutation.

Five-year-old Avery’s parents keep her busy, even though the adorable little girl can’t sit up or talk.

She has a rare kind of epilepsy called CDKL5 deficiency disorder.

“Our neurologist called, he said ‘Well, there’s nobody in the world that has the specific mutation that she has, so I can’t tell you what it means for her, I can tell you it’s significant,’” Avery’s mother, Kristin Kozera said.

Research Project Appears To Be Reversing Effects Of Alzheimer’s

Kristin and Brian Kozera, who live in Blue Bell, soon learned their third child had severe deficits. and there was no treatment.

“Really, it’s just the bottom falls out, it was tough, it was a really — it was a tough diagnosis,” Kristin said.

But they’re determined to do anything that might help. Avery has all kinds of special equipment and joins the family for everything.

“She just brings out the best in everybody, just because she can’t talk, she makes everybody’s life better, anyone she touches,” Brian said.

The family hopes to raise awareness about rare diseases, to educate people and raise money for research.

“There’s so many people out there living with a rare disease, but because there are so few of them in each individual disease, it’s really hard to get awareness and it’s hard to raise funds,” Kristin said.

And while they wait and hope for better treatments, Avery’s parents hope people come to understand what they know — how very special their little girl is.

“We’re hoping to get a little more acceptance, more inclusion, more opportunities and resources to make sure she’s able to come and do all the things any other kid would be able to do,” Brian said.

Avery’s mom says they’ve found a lot of support on Facebook. Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February, a month known for having a rare  number of days.

Doctors say there are over 6,000 rare diseases.

Phillies Manager Gabe Kapler Found Out From Fans About Bryce Harper Signing

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — Where were you when you heard the Philadelphia Phillies signed Bryce Harper? Manager Gabe Kapler said he heard from fans during the team’s spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

“We had some fans behind us who were sharing moment-by-moment tweets with us. We were getting, like literally, four fans right behind where we were sitting, telling us terms and who was tweeting what. We were like, ‘Who was making the reports? We need to make sure the person is credible,’” Kapler told reporters after the game.

‘He’s Worth That Much Money’: Fans Back Phillies Spending Reported $330 Million For Bryce Harper

Harper’s reported 13-year, $330 million deal is the largest contract in baseball history.

“If the reports are true, it’s a huge moment for our baseball team,” Kapler said. “Certainly I think that the city of Philadelphia would embrace Bryce Harper. I think he would be very happy in this city because our fans care deeply about winning.”

Harper’s agent, Scott Boras, said the deal was agreed to shortly before noon, subject to a successful physical.

A 26-year-old All-Star outfielder who had spent his entire big league career with the Washington Nationals, Harper topped the $325 million, 13-year agreement outfielder Giancarlo Stanton reached before the 2015 season with the Miami Marlins.

Harper’s agreement, first reported by the MLB Network, tops the previous high for a free agent, set last week when infielder Manny Machado signed a $300 million, 10-year deal with the San Diego Padres. Harper’s average annual value of $25.4 million ranks 14th in baseball history, well below the high of $34.1 million set by Arizona pitcher Zack Greinke as part of a $206.5 million, six-year contract that started in 2016.

Harper gets a $20 million signing bonus, a $10 million salary this year, $26 million in each of the following nine seasons and $22 million in each of the last three years. None of the money is deferred, and he gets a full no-trade provision.

Philadelphia has been among the most active teams this offseason, adding outfielder Andrew McCutchen for $50 million over three years and reliever David Robertson for $23 million over two years, and acquiring catcher J.T. Realmuto and shortstop Jean Segura. They also gave ace Aaron Nola a $45 million, four-year deal.

After leading their division in early August, the Phillies went 16-33 over the final 49 games of last season and at 80-82 finished with a losing record for the sixth straight season. Harper will return to his old home in the season’s second week, when the Phillies play at the NL East rival Nationals on April 2 and 3.

School District Never Alerted Police, Child Welfare That Teen Killed In Bucks County Apartment Stopped Going To School

MORRISVILLE, Pa. (CBS) — There was a new twist Thursday in the murders of five family members found dead in a Bucks County apartment. The Morrisville School District never alerted police or child welfare that one of the dead children stopped going to school weeks ago. Thirteen-year-old Damon Decree Jr. was supposedly pulled out of school to be home schooled, but the district never received the proper paperwork.

“It’s not fair,” said Veronica King, of Morrisville. “He was a little kid. He still had his life ahead of him.”

Mother, Daughter Claim They Killed 5 Family Members Because Everyone Wanted To Die, Police Say

Parents at the Morrisville School District are hoping for swift justice after, police say, Shana Decree and her 19-year-old daughter, Dominique Decree, killed five family members. One of the victims is a Morrisville student, 13-year-old Damon Decree Jr.

“He was a great kid,” said Morrisville School District Superintendent Jason Harris. “Made students smile. He was a friend to all.”

The superintendent says, two weeks ago, Damon’s mother, Shana Decree, called the district, saying her son was not returning to class because she was planning on home schooling him. Decree was supposed to provide the superintendent with a home school curriculum, but she never did, and school leaders could not get in contact with the family following that phone call.

“We have several things in place, a bunch of which are in our board policy. Letters are sent home, phone calls, we send people to check on the student,” said Harris. “We did everything we were supposed to do under law and code and within due diligence.”

When questioned if the district called, wrote letters and did door checks, Harris said, “I’d rather not discuss what we did.”

Criminals ‘Think They Can Literally Get Away With Murder’ Because Of Philadelphia DA’s Policies, Feds Claim

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s a war of words between the Philadelphia district attorney and federal prosecutors, who claim Larry Krasner’s policies have led to a more violent Philadelphia. After the U.S. Attorney’s Office issued an explosive reprimand of the District Attorney’s policies, Larry Krasner responded.

“What is not called science is claiming it’s ‘common sense’ that if homicides go up, then they were caused by the district attorney,” Krasner said.

Angry federal prosecutors have filed charges in a case prosecuted by Philadelphia’s DA.

“The policies that his office is pursuing is dangerous to Philadelphia,” U.S. Attorney William McSwain said. “This is not a personal thing, this is a policy thing. I think that the policies are leading to a rise in the violent crime.”

Man Charged In Shooting That Critically Injured Deli Owner In Cobbs Creek

This criticism stems from a plea agreement for Jovaun Patterson, who in May 2018, robbed a West Philadelphia deli with an AK-47.

The deal did not include attempted murder.

The feds have now charged Patterson with federal attempted robbery and firearm charges.

“Violent criminals take notice of all of that,” McSwain said. “They’ve become emboldened, they think they can literally get away with murder.”

But Krasner says Thursday’s comments are motivated only for political reasons.

“Mr. McSwain clearly wanted a moment in the limelight and he wanted it for political reasons that we’re gonna find about later. I can guarantee you that,” fired back Krasner.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office correlates Krasner’s policies with the rising homicide rate in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities have charged a man accused of shooting a Philadelphia shop owner during an attempted robbery in the city’s Cobbs Creek neighborhood last year. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced criminal charges against suspect Jovaun Patterson, Thursday afternoon.

Patterson has been charged with attempted robbery and one count of using, carrying and discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.

The attempted robbery happened on the 300 block of South 54th Street on May 5. Police say the deli owner was outside his store, when Patterson used a military-style assault rifle to shoot him.

The deli owner’s right leg was nearly blown off in the shooting. He is now confined to a wheelchair.

Patterson faces a minimum of 10 years in prison.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — After months of rumors and speculation, it has finally happened — Bryce Harper has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to multiple reports.

ESPN reports Harper has signed a 13-year, $330 million deal with no opt-outs.

Fans have been clamoring for this moment since the season ended as Harper, a six-time All-Star, was one of the big free agent superstars on the market, along with Manny Machado. The Phillies have now added an MVP-caliber, left-handed bat, to what is now a very potent lineup.

The 26-year-old former MVP finished last season with 34 home runs, 100 RBI, a .249 batting average and an .889 OPS.

This is the biggest free agent splash the Phillies have made since signing Cliff Lee after the 2010 season.

The Phillies have had a busy offseason, adding outfielder Andrew McCutchen, a former MVP himself, reliever David Robertson, and trading for shortstop Jean Segura and catcher J.T. Realmuto.

In January, Phillies officials met with Harper and his wife in Las Vegas.

With this signing, the Phillies have vaulted themselves as a favorite to win the National League East. Last season, the Phillies were in first place in August before collapsing the final month-and-a-half of the season. They finished third with an 80-82 record.

Philadelphia Weather: Another Round Of Wintry Weather Likely To Cause Slippery Friday Morning Commute

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — We are tracking yet another round of wintry weather across the Delaware Valley. Like many of the systems we have dealt with this winter, it is not the amount of snow that will be the issue, it is the timing.

Clouds are expected to increase this evening with light snow developing from the west and southwest after midnight. The biggest headache about this nuisance-of-a-system, is that it will likely cause a slow and slippery morning commute on Friday.

Snowfall accumulations will generally range from a coating to 2 inches across the area, with the higher snowfall amounts falling south and west of Philadelphia.

Areas south of Dover, Delaware and into Cape May County, New Jersey will likely deal with a wintry mix considering the dynamics of this system.

Conditions are expected to improve throughout the day on Friday, just in time for us to track more chances of precipitation as we head into the weekend.

More to come on that.

Pop Warner Becomes First National Football Organization To Ban Traditional Three-Point Stance

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

LANGHORNE, Pa. (CBS/CNN) — In a first for any national football organization, the Pop Warner youth league announced Thursday that it will ban the traditional three-point stance.

Pop Warner, the nation’s oldest youth football organization, will be eliminating the stance in its three youngest divisions — Tiny Mite (5 to 7 years old), Mitey Mite (7 to 9) and Junior Pee Wee (8 to 10) — as of the 2019 season.

Eagles Do Right Thing By Letting Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles Become Free Agent

Beginning in September, players in those divisions will no longer be able to place their hands on the ground before they snap the ball. The concern is that this position lowers players’ heads, making them more likely to lead with their heads and putting them in a more vulnerable position for head injury.

Football has been in the spotlight because of concussions and the prevalence of the Alzheimer’s-like disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, among former players. There are efforts to make the game safer for even the youngest players.

The players will now have to be upright or in a more modified squat position with their hands on their legs.

“We believe this change is another step in creating a safer, better football experience for young people,” Jon Butler, executive director of Pop Warner, said in a statement. “We are changing how players are introduced to the sport and how they learn to play the game. We are also setting the stage for our higher levels of play to adopt the change.”

Pop Warner’s plan is to eliminate the stance entirely, but there is no firm timeline. League officials plan to use this season to evaluate the change.

“When making decisions like this we first look at them from a medical standpoint and examine whether the change will make the playing experience safer for our young athletes. We believe this rule does that,” said Dr. Julian Bailes, chairman of the Pop Warner Medical Advisory Committee. “Eliminating the three-point stance should lessen the amount of force between linemen and we expect it will cut down on unintentional helmet contact at the line.”

Pop Warner will also be eliminating the kickoff in its Pee Wee (9- to 11-year-old) division, after banning the move in its three youngest divisions in 2016. Now, after a score or when starting a half, the ball will be placed at the 35 yard line.

‘A Class Act’: Eagles Fans React On Social Media To Nick Foles Being Free Agent

The kickoff poses a risk for head injury because it can result in players running and tackling at particularly high speeds.

Pop Warner will also be eliminating the kickoff in its Pee Wee (9- to 11-year-old) division, after banning the move in its three youngest divisions as of 2016, out of concerns over the dangers of the kickoff. The play can find players running and tackling each other at high speeds.

After a score or when starting a half, the ball will now be placed at the 35 yard line.

Pop Warner has about 325,000 children between the ages of 5 to 16 participating in its football and cheer and dance programs nationally.

Goydos also was a professor at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The indictment alleges Goydos recorded more than two dozen women “under circumstances in which a reasonable person would not expect to be observed.” A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office said some of the images were obtained inside a bathroom.

A Rutgers spokesman said Wednesday that Goydos was banned from university property last year and later resigned. The university said none of the alleged crimes were related to patient care.

Goydos was initially arrested last year and charged with illegal possession of an assault rifle. That charge was included in the indictment released Wednesday.

An attorney who represented Goydos when he was arrested last year didn’t return a message seeking comment Wednesday.

3 Cheers: Delco’s Own Spider-Man

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — If you’re around Delaware County, you might just see Spider-Man, whether at a community event or a local children’s hospital. Eyewitness News spotted him at Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital, and even with some CBS3 stars.

He calls himself the Delco Spider-Man.

“What have you been doing today?” CBS3’s Chandler Lutz asked the costumed crusader.

“Today, a little bit of morning patrol, trying to swing with the wind and see how that goes,” Spider-Man said.

Besides keeping his community safe, Spidey was able to touch the hearts of over a thousand children through his visits last year alone.

“What does that mean to you?” Lutz asked.

“It fills the heart completely full. Grows a couple of sizes,” Spider-Man said, “because they’re in a battle that you don’t even realize is even happening until you see them.”

Spider-Man never shows up empty-handed. He brings sunglasses, toys, coloring books.

“He gave me these pink sunglasses,” said nine-year-old Kylie McHugh.

Eleven-year-old Daniel Scharff of Audubon, NJ, had a theory about Spider-Man’s visit: “Maybe there’s no more bad guys out, and he can have a tiny break.”

Spider-Man encourages kids to listen to the doctors.

“I remember when I was a little kid, a little boy. I had some injuries and I needed to get myself better,” Spider-Man told K.J. Showalter, one of the patients at A.I. duPont.

“Uh oh!” K.J. said.

“And, yeah, look! It worked!” Spidey said. “I did my exercises, and I’m here.”

“Me too!” K.J. said.

“That’s how we do it,” Spidey said as they shared a high five.

This hero wants to keep his identity a secret.

But Chandler met Spidey’s closest friend, Jeff Thayer, who knows Spider-Man like nobody else.

“He’s a personal friend of mine,” Thayer said.

Jeff says the Spider-Man character inspires him.

“So literally anyone can wear the mask,” Thayer said. “There’s always somebody behind the suit.”

“And to show that, somebody, you can be anybody,” Lutz said.

“You can be a hero,” Thayer said.

And when Spider-Man isn’t being a superhero, he works a normal nine-to-five job.

“As long as the smiles are there, that’s the goal,” Spider-Man said.

This 3 Cheers is for the Delco Spider-Man, doing all this because it’s what he loves.
