BEAR, DE (KYW Newsradio) — A teenage day care worker has been charged with murdering a 4-month-girl in Delaware, police say.
The Delaware State Police say just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, troopers were called to the Little People Child Development Center in Bear.
Investigators say the 4-month-old girl was found unresponsive, before she was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead.
The infant, police say, had been under the care of 19-year-old Dejoynay Ferguson of New Castle.
According to police, Ferguson had used her hands to restrict the baby’s breathing until she become unresponsive, before placing her back in her crib.
After approximately 20 minutes, police say, Ferguson told the daycare’s owner that the baby was unresponsive.
Authorities say Ferguson has been charged with first degree murder.
Following her arraignment, Ferguson was committed to the Dolores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $1 million cash bail.
Officials say the Office of Childcare has since suspended the daycare’s license indefinitely.
