PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A park across the street from 30th Street Station is in the final stage of construction and will soon open to the public.
A crane hoisted 25-foot Dawn Redwood trees from a truck to various sections of Drexel Square Park. They will form a perimeter for the 1.3 acre urban space.
“We have our elliptical lawn here in the center,” said Joe Ritchie, Vice President of Development with Brandywine Reality Trust. “We have steps all the way around it which are opportunities for seating great opportunities to use the lawn in a number of different ways for relaxing or reading or for kicking a ball around.”
When the park opens in May, it will be the first completed project of Schuylkill Yards, a $3.5 billion development project on land owned by Drexel University.
Fourteen acres between 30th Street Station and the universities to the west, Drexel and Penn, will be developed over the next 15 to 20 years.
More than six acres of the 14 acres is reserved for public space.
