PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This week on Flashpoint: Host and KYW Newsradio community affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions about the state of mental health crises and suicide.
This special, one-hour edition of Flashpoint is part of Entercom’s I’m Listening initiative, which focuses on suicide prevention.
What are suicidal thoughts? Where do they come from? What are the signs? How do we stop them? How do we prevent suicide? What can families do to recreate a safe place for their loved ones to seek support?
Dr. Megan Spokas, psychologist, suicide prevention researcher and professor at La Salle University, joins Dr. Zenida Heath, a psychotherapist who trains practitioners on suicide prevention; Ishan Hines, a suicide loss survivor and founder of My Brother’s Keeper Cares; and Noelia Rivera-Calderon, a suicide attempt survivor and fellow at the National Women’s Law Center.
The newsmaker of the week is Desse’Rae Stage, an artist, public speaker and suicide prevention advocate who runs the nonprofit Live Through This. Stage, who is also a suicide attempt survivor, founded the Live Through This blog nearly a decade ago to highlight the voices of survivors.
Many times, those who attempt suicide hide in the shadows, afraid to share their stories publicly. But Stage has interviewed nearly 200 survivors, and she shares what she’s learned on this weekend’s show.
The changemaker of the week is the Bucks County Suicide Prevention Task Force. The organization has spent the past decade implementing crisis intervention training and more recently, launched a hotline dedicated to helping first responders dealing with their own mental health crises.
Wendy Flannigan, co-chair of the task force, along with Sgt. Stephen Kingsdorf of Northampton Police Department, discuss the efforts.
