PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It’s March and you know what that means: time to make those brackets! But what if instead of college basketball teams, you had to fill your bracket with Philadelphia cheesesteak spots?
Well, since Sunday is National Cheesesteak Day, that’s exactly what KYW Newsradio asked some Philadelphians to do.
It doesn’t get much more Philadelphia than Rocky…except when we’re talking cheesesteaks. So before we play any games in this mouthwatering tournament, we had to do a little scouting.
“The perfect cheesesteak needs to be seasoned properly, a little bit of salt, a little bit of pepper,” said Kevin Jones.
“The meat’s got to be chopped up,” said Jim Nasium.
“You need to crisp the steak to a perfect golden brown,” Nick Scheips added. “It needs to have onions and provolone. I like provolone and wiz.”
“You have to have the right roll,” said Anthony Christie. “If you don’t have the right roll it doesn’t matter if you have the right meat or cheese.”
Just like the Big Dance there is almost always a “Cinderella Team,” someone that nobody knows much about that goes far.
So who were some of this year’s “Cinderella” of steaks?
Who did Philadelphians feel were a top “seeded” team that would make an earlier than expected exit?
“Between Pat’s and Geno’s, one of those is getting eliminated Sweet 16,” Christie declared. “Going out early.”
We also asked some Philly natives for their “Final Four” and we got all kinds of contenders.
“You got to throw in Dalessandro’s.”
“You’re killing me, I love them all!”
So who would be cutting down the nets this year?
Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop, in Northeast Philadelphia, received the most votes for best in town on this day.
Who would have been on your bracket, and who do you think should have brough home the title?
KYW Newsradio’s Kevin Wright contributed to this report.
