Martelli out as head coach at Saint Joseph’s University

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A big change is in store for the Big 5. Phil Martelli out as head coach at Saint Joseph’s University.

He had led the Hawks for 24 seasons, winning 444 games.

He took Saint Joseph’s to a No. 1 seed in the Elite 8 of the NCAA tournament back in 2004. The last three seasons, the Hawks missed the post-season and dealt with a lot of injuries.

Saint Joseph’s went 14 and 18 this past season, and the athletic administration has decided it’s time for a change.

According to tweets from the university, following a comprehensive evaluation of their men’s basketball program, Saint Joseph’s will start an immediate search for a new head coach.

They thanked Martelli him for “his long service, dedication and stewardship” and said he “stands out among his peers in college basketball on the court, in the community and as an ambassador for SJU.”
