PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The annual Philly Spring Cleanup got started Saturday morning with a kickoff event in Kensington.
The cleanup is a city-wide event where volunteers and city leaders make their way out to neighborhood parks for a few hours of cleaning with a touch of love. Mayor Jim Kenney helped kick off the cleanup at Hope Park in Kensington, an area the city has been focusing a lot of its efforts on to try and bring an end to drug abuse that has run rampant in recent years.
“And we’re not giving up on this neighborhood ever, and we’re not giving up on the people who live in this neighborhood,” Kenney said. “They’re good people, they pay their taxes, they go to work everyday, and they deserve to have a decent place, a decent neighborhood to live in.”
Volunteers at the Hope Park cleanup were given special instructions on how to handle needles they would likely come across, but they otherwise focused their efforts on removing trash, weeds and anything else that was cluttering up the park on East Indiana Avenue.
