NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — As the region continues the first week of the “green” phase, local health officials are sharing some important reminders — and lessons learned.
Montgomery County Commissioner Dr. Val Arkoosh says a big reason more businesses can reopen is because they know a lot more now about the coronavirus than they did 16 weeks ago.
“We’ve built a plane and we are flying it. In those early days, we were ‘literally’ building the plane as we were trying to fly it,” she said.
She says contact tracing got overwhelmed early on, but now it’s back up with a much bigger staff.
Hospitals have a better idea how to treat patients as compared to four months ago. And, she says, EMS and first responders are better equipped.
“We still don’t know everything, but we do know a lot more about how it spreads,” she said.
Two key lessons: The virus can stay in the air, and people who don’t have symptoms can spread it.
“Those are two really important pieces of information and the two pieces of information that make me now strongly encourage people to wear masks,” she said.
