Philly tourism grows for a record 9th year, report says

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Tourism in Philadelphia is on the rise, and its growth is having a big economic impact.

More than 45 million people visited the region last year, according to data from tourism company Visit Philadelphia.

Jeff Guaracino with Visit Philly says that’s a record ninth straight year of tourism growth for the area.

“That’s big business for our region, because those visitors spent $7.6 billion,” he explained. “That’s a lot of money and a new record, and that supports more than 103,000 jobs.”

According to their annual report, those more than 103,000 jobs, “could fill all the seats in Lincoln Financial Field, Wells Fargo Center, The Met Philadelphia, The Tower Theather, the Academey of Music and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts,”

Caitlin and Daniel say they made a day trip to Philly from Baltimore.

They say the city has some unique draws that made them want to visit.

“The food is great, the history is also very cool,” Caitlin said. “I like going to historic cities and learning about different historical facts.”

“We finally found a day to do it,” Daniel added. “We just wanted to explore the city.”

Guaracino says Philadelphia is marketable year round, and that helps give it a leg up on places people visit for seasonal activities.
