PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two Reading Terminal Market vendors will be featured on a cable TV show Sunday and Monday.
When the film crew for the show “Food Paradise” came to Reading Terminal Market, Carmen’s Famous Italian Hoagies and Cheesesteaks owner Carmen DiGugliemo says he was thrilled.
“The international language is food,” he said. “You know, it’s what brings people together, it’s what brings people into our city.”
DiGuglielmo said when the crew came to film, he had to make a lot of extra cheesesteaks.
“Because once they say ‘cut,’ you have to start over again so you have to put more fresh meat up,” he explained. “One time we had to do eight to 10 takes on it.”
So who got to eat all the extras?
“The crew,” laughed DiGuglielmo. “I think some of them wanted more. That’s why they kept doing the cut.”
The crew also filmed with George Mickel of Hunger Burger, who said it felt like a lifetime ago.
“Two years ago,” he marveled. “We thought it got lost. We actually asked them about it and never got a response but we didn’t think we’d ever see the light of day on that.”
Mickel pointed out how strange it would be to watch this Cooking Channel show after so long.
“To be honest, it’s actually emotional every day,” he addressed.
After all, those were pre-coronavirus times.
“It’s sad,” said DiGuglielmo, “It’s going to be sad to watch that to see how things were.”
“People are in tough shape right now,” Mickel added. “Small business has taken a huge hit, especially restaurants.”
Mickel says there will be a disclosure ahead of the show indicating when it was filmed.
“In the post from the Reading Terminal it states that it was done a while ago, so hopefully people read that because I was concerned about that too,” Mickel said. “I hope everybody reads that because when they see it, they’re going to think, ‘Why aren’t they wearing masks right now?'”
