She Shines Conference set to mobilize women of faith

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of women of faith will gather Saturday for an inaugural conference designed to get women to engage in the public square.

The She Shines Conference will take place on November 16, at the New Covenant Church of Philadelphia in Germantown, and is designed for women who are extremely active in the church.

“Organizing for repasts, serving on the choir, ushering, deaconesses, everything, working to make the church stay afloat,” said conference chair Jenne Ayers of the duties women in the church often assume.

Ayers said many of these active women of faith are super voters, but don’t extend their attention beyond that. To that end, the conference, themed “From the Pew and Public Square: the Call, the Challenge, the Commitment,” is designed to mobilize women of faith to increase their civic participation, community engagement and talents.

“God did not drop all this in me to sit at home,” said Robin Shine Maddox, founder of Celebrating Sisterhood, which organized the day-long event. She said women of faith take their roles as wives and mothers seriously, but their skills are transferable.

“We need to go out and what he has equipped us with, our knowledge, skills and ability and talent—let take this stuff to the street,” Maddox said.
