PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Bucks County woman won a free air scrubber for her sister, a COVID-19 survivor, in a contest she heard about on KYW Newsradio. But the story didn’t stop there.
Air scrubbers can cost thousands of dollars. The systems which eliminate particles and bacteria from the air and surfaces are in high demand right now. So when Donna Beers heard about the giveaway from ECI Comfort, the first person she thought of was her sister.
“She’s really probably the most selfless person you would ever wanna meet,” she said.
Beers’ sister Pegi Nocito is 69 years old, which puts her in the high-risk category for COVID-19. She’s a nurse at a senior care facility taking care of the elderly. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, Pegi contracted the virus.
“She was really sick and she got through it, and she’s back to work,” said Beers. “She’s just extraordinary. The moment that she got cleared to go back to work, she went back to her residents. She’s taking care of them again.”
Even though Pegi has recovered, she has not seen her son in a month because he’s vulnerable as a leukemia survivor who recently had a bone marrow transplant. The air scrubber will help keep her loved ones safe.
“I knew she wasn’t going to see him until she knew for sure that she was okay,” Beers shared. “I thought, ‘Well, gosh, I know she’s going to be worried about him going there. Every time we turn around it’s, ‘You can get it from surfaces, you can’t get it from surfaces.’ At least that’s something she doesn’t have to worry about. I’m tremendously grateful to them, I really am.”
