Things to do in Philly this weekend, Sept. 13 to 15

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The end of summer is near, but it’s hard to tell with so many outdoor music, food and cultural festivals on the docket this weekend.

For the unapologetic foodies, this weekend is for you: From Allentown to Phoenixville to Northern Liberties, you have plenty of samples to taste-test.

Plus, the revered Center City Restaurant Week kicks off this weekend. (Pro tip: Always save some room for dessert.)

FESTIVALS

EVENT: Philadelphia Jazz and Soul Festival

DATE/TIME: Saturday, 2 to 10 p.m.

WHERE: 15th and South streets, Philadelphia

DETAILS: The seventh annual jazz festival returns to South Street for an afternoon and evening of music. Bring a chair and set up next to the stage to experience all the different artists. There will also be craft vendors and food.

EVENT: Schuylkill Freedoms Festival

DATE/TIME: Saturday, 2 to 7 p.m.

WHERE: 1601 Valley Forge Road, Phoenixville

DETAILS: A partnership between the Freedoms Foundation and Schuylkill Township helped form this outdoor music festival. There will be live local music, food, craft vendors and activities for kids.

EVENT: International Cultural Festival

DATE/TIME: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WHERE: Arts Park, 24-32 N. Fifth St., Allentown

DETAILS: The festival’s purpose is to raise cultural awareness through cuisine, art, fashion and music. There will be live performances, food, henna, face painting, a photobooth, and more.

EVENT: Harvest Festival at Setter Ridge Vineyards

DATE/TIME: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHERE: Setter Ridge Vineyards, 99 Dietrich Valley Road, Kutztown

DETAILS: This festival offers live music, food vendors, beer, wine and hayrides for the whole family.

FOOD/DRINKS

EVENT: Philadelphia Burger Brawl

DATE/TIME: Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m.

WHERE: The Navy Yard, 4747 Broad St., Philadelphia

DETAILS: More than 60 restaurants will battle it out for “Burger Supremacy.” A ticket gets you complimentary burgers from participating restaurants and a free cocktail. The event funds programming through technology for Philadelphia’s underserved elementary and middle schools.

PRICE: General admission is $45; VIP is $100

EVENT: Evil Genius’ 8th Birthday Party

DATE/TIME: Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.

WHERE: The entirety of the block between Cecil B. Moore Avenue and Palmer Street under the El on Front Street

DETAILS: Evil Genius Beer Company is turning eight and throwing an outdoor party to celebrate. There will be a live DJ, cornhole and axe throwing — with a trained staff on hand.

EVENT: Drink Beer! Save Cats!

DATE/TIME: Friday, 7 to 10 p.m.

WHERE: Philadelphia Brewing Company, 2440 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia

DETAILS: Join City Kitties Rescue for an evening of beer-drinking dedicated to raising money for the rescue. Your $20 ticket includes your first drink and two raffle tickets. It is pay-as-you-go after that, and the brewery will donate back to the rescue for every pint bought.

EVENT: Center City Restaurant Week begins

DATE: Begins Sept. 15 and lasts through Sept. 27

WHERE: Dozens of restaurants in Center City

DETAILS: Enjoy a three-course meal for $35 a person or a three-course lunch for $20 a person at a multitude of restaurants in Center City. Some restaurants won’t be offering all meals on Saturday and Sunday. This will be clearly marked on their menus.

GET OUTDOORS

EVENT: Cinema in the Cemetery: “Gremlins”

DATE/TIME: Friday, 8 to 10 p.m.

WHERE: Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave., Philadelphia 

DETAILS: In conjunction with the Philadelphia Film Society, Laurel Hill Cemetery will play host to a movie night under the stars. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic or bring a friend. The feature film will be “Gremlins.”

PRICE: General admission is $12; seniors and students are $10; members are $7; youth tickets are $6

EVENT: Free Week at Philadelphia Magic Gardens begins

DATE/TIME: Begins Sept. 15 and lasts through Sept. 20; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

WHERE: Philadelphia Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., Philadelphia

DETAILS: Philadelphia Magic Gardens is offering free general admission to residents of Philadelphia County. Admission includes access to the outdoor sculpture garden, the exhibition “Translations” on display in the indoor galleries, daily gallery talks, and hands-on activities. Reserve your ticket ahead of time to avoid sold-out slots.

EVENT: Dogadelphia

DATE/TIME: Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.

WHERE: Seventh and Spring Garden streets, Philadelphia

DETAILS: Come listen to presentations from National Park Service BARK Rangers, PennVet Working Dog Center, the Philadelphia Police Department Canine Unit, and Y2K9s Dog Sports Club. There will be a beer garden, entertainment, dog vendors, food trucks and plenty of dogs.

EVENT: Opera at the Mall

DATE/TIME: Saturday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia

DETAILS: Opera Philadelphia’s recent revival of “La bohème” is coming to Independence Mall. Before the broadcast, enjoy the Family Fun Zone with child-friendly activities and our popular photobooth. Watch pre-show videos, including interviews with the cast members, and enjoy eats from some of the city’s favorite food trucks.
