Young adults who want GED can take part in free program in West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Young adults in West Philadelphia who want to get a GED can sign up for a special free program this Tuesday and Thursday at the Sayre Morris Recreation Center.

The free GED program is being offered by the Philadelphia police 18th District, Community Solutions and SOAR as part of the Opportunities Industrialization Center or OIC.

Sgt. Sharone Johnson explains the requirements.

“You had to be previously incarcerated, or a returning citizen of Philadelphia, as well as being between 18-24 years of age,” Johnson said.

Johnson says 20 people have already registered for the program, which starts April 1. She says this program gives many drop outs a second chance.

“You have an individual who is 18 in the ninth grade and may fail this school year, so this is a opportunity where you have adults now given an opportunity to get their high school diploma,” she added.

The program also offers graduates the chance to go to trade school or connects them to potential employers.

For more information, you can call the 18th District at 215-686-3180.
