Donald Trump’s erratic behavior is growing worse since losing the election, and some Republicans are concerned his judgment will cost them a shot at retaking congressional majorities next year.
The twice-impeached one-term president has handpicked picked conspiracy theorists like Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) and newcomers like former NFL star Herschel Walker as his favorites in Senate races, while picking fights with GOP-backed incumbents like Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) to the dismay of some Republican strategists, reported the National Journal.
“We can’t let this guy pick our candidates if we want to be in the Senate majority,” said one GOP strategist involved in Senate races.
Republicans need Trump to energize their party’s base, but some are concerned that his obsession with loyalty could cost them in the 2022 midterms.
“The key is to do nothing to provoke him,” the GOP strategist said. “There’s a big difference between Trump endorsing someone and trying to kill you. The trick here is not to piss Trump off.”
